United States War of 1812 Army Officer, Virginia Governor. Educated at William and Mary College in Williamsburg, Virginia, during the War of 1812 he was commissioned Colonel and commander of the 23rd United States Infantry regiment. He led his men at the November 11, 1813 Battle of Crysler's Farm, where he was severely wounded in the British victory. After the war he was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates from Montgomery County in 1816 and served as Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia from 1816 to 1819. During his administration the University of Virginia was formed. Preston County, Virginia was created in his honor in 1818.
