John was born Johannes Johannessen Hegrenes at Hegrenes (farm), Alhus sokn (parish), Jolster prestegjeld (head parish), Jolster kommune, Sunnefjord region of Sogn og Fjordane (county), Norway. He emigrated to the USA in 1897 and lived in Fargo, ND where he met Marit Olsen (Kveto). They married on December 1, 1900 and returned temporarily to Norway. They came back on 07/11/1901 into the Philadelphia harbor accompanied by John's brother Sievert and Marit's brother Anders (Andrew).

John died in Minneapolis, MN as a result of Hodgkins Disease. He had been living at their farm home in Silverton township.
