He was a devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather and husband. He was a WWII Purple Heart Veteran, served in the Navy, attaining the rank of Lt. Commander. He served on the hospital ship, USS Comfort, of which a book has recently been written. He was in the reserves until 1966.
Married to Mildred Berry (Birkenbach) in 1941. They moved to California where he joined GMAC in Long Beach in April of 1941. He was District Representative for GMAC in San Diego for 33 years. He retired in 1974.
He lived in La Mesa until 2002, then moved to the Remington Club in Rancho Bernardo in September, 2002. He was caregiver to his wife, Mildred, for 17 years. He was a member of the La Mesa Planning Committee, a Charter member of La Mesa Beautiful and volunteered with the La Mesa Historical Society. He was a volunteer for the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center for nine years.
He loved sports and books. His extensive library of books on history and Presidents of the US has been donated to the Friends of the Library in Rancho San Diego.
