U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Williams College, in 1815, moved to Jamestown, New York, in November 1815, taught school, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1819 and commenced to practice law in Chautauqua County, New York. He was an editorial writer on the Jamestown Journal, (1826-29) and a member of the New York State Assembly, (1829-30). In 1833, he was elected as an Anti-Masonic candidate to the Twenty-third Congress and reelected as an Anti-Jacksonian to the Twenty-fourth Congress, serving until 1837. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was prosecuting attorney of Chautauqua County, (1847-50), judge of Chautauqua County, (1859-63) and served as United States commissioner for the northern district of New York, until his death.
