US Congressman. He was born in Durham, New York, where he was admitted to the bar in 1805 and practiced law for many years. His political career began in 1810 when Governor Daniel D. Tompkins appointed him surrogate of Greene County, and from 1812 to 1813 he served in the New York State Assembly. In 1814 Adams was elected as a Republican to represent New York's 8th District in the United States House of Representatives, but his election was successfully contested by Erastus Root and he was replaced after nine months in office (March to December 1815). Later switching allegiances to the Democratic Party, he was elected as a Jacksonian to again represent New York's 8th District in the House of Representatives, and served from 1833 to 1835. He did not seek reelection and settled in Catskill, New York, where he continued his law practice and was director of the Catskill-Canajoharie Railroad.
