Son of Joshua Mersereau, who was a Rev. Officer and of Huguenot descent. Further info. from FAG member Cherie Officer and The Olean (NY) Democrat, August 14, 1883 Page 1. John came to Portville from Steuben County, NY around 1853. He was engaged in the lumber business and owned large Mills in Company with the Weston's (in Weston's Mills, NY). He had served one term as a county Legislature in Steuben County. He was a good friend of the celebrated A.B.Dickinson. His daughter(possibly Harriet?) was married to Wallace Weston. An only son died some years ago. The funeral was held on August 12, 1883 at Portville.
