A son of Charles and Lucy (Holbrook) Osgood, "John H., born Jan. 24, 1843, now a resident of Brooklyn, Conn., graduated from Norwich (Vt.) University, in 1864; as captain of a company of United States Colored Volunteers (Infantry) in the 116th Regiment, he served in the Army of the James during the fall and winter of 1864-65, and he also commanded a detachment in digging the 'Dutch Gap Canal.'"
