Son of Samuel Thaxter IV and Bathsheba Lincoln.

Adam was an officer in the Boston Custom House; Deputy Marshall and later, president of the Mechanics' Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Boston. He was the first president of the proprietors of the Hingham Cemetery and the first person to make donations of the first six acres of land for the enlargement of this historic place.
