A native of Edenton, N.C., he was the son of the late Benjamin and Josey Ashley. He retired from civil service at the Naval Air Station as an electrician. He was an Army veteran of World War II, a member of Miles Memorial United Methodist Church, Norview Masonic Lodge No. 113, AF & AM, Norfolk Scottish Rite, Khedive Shrine Temple, Moose Lodge and the I.B.E.W. Local.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Virginia Edison Ashley; five nieces, Elaine, Diana, Denise, Rebecca and Phyllis; great-nieces and -nephews, Crystal, Melinda, Aaron, Ross, Carl and Jessica; and a sister-in-law, Catherine Calfas.
A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Forest Lawn Cemetery with the Rev. Kathleen Monge officiating. The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel, today from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, c/o Khedive Temple, 645 Woodlake Drive, Chesapeake, VA 23320. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon- brown.com.
