Funeral services were held at the home in Lowell Sunday afternoon at 4:00 for Ensign Robert A. Fineis, who was killed Sunday, April 26, when the plane he was piloting crashed in Dismal Swamp, Norfolk, Virginia. The body arrived in Grand Rapids at 11:00 Sunday, accompanied by Ensign Russell Earle, of Norfolk, and services were in charge of Clark Post, American Legion, of Lowell. Members of that post were joined by representative of Dale E. Hyland Post, of Portland, for services at Portland cemetery where buried was made on the family lot.
Ensign Earle was assisted by Ensign Bruce Lindsley, who was with Ensign Finies during training at Grosse Isle, and Cadet Arthur Curtis, Jr., of Lowell who was with Ensign Fineis at Jacksonville, Florida.
According to first-hand information from Ensign Earle, the plane piloted by Ensign Fineis and one other plane which were at the end of the formation, crashed into the ground when they became enveloped in fog and dense smoke from the burning swampland. When located, only the tail of the plane piloted by Ensign Fineis was visible above ground.
Ensign Fineis had often visited in Portland, and many from here attended the services at Lowell, MI.
