US Congressman, US Senator. He was elected as a Democrat to represent Mississippi as At-Large delegate in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1845 to 1847. He was later elected as a Democratic Senator from Mississippi to the United States Senate, serving from 1852 to 1857. His political career included his serving as a member of the Tennessee State Senate from 1833 to 1834, as a Circuit Judge from 1837 to 1845, and in 1848, as a member of the Mississippi State House of Representatives in 1850, and as Delegate to the Mississippi State Constitutional Convention in 1851.
