Benjamin was the son of Benjamin and Rhonda Barnes of Theresa, New York. He married Lois Spring in about 1843. She was born 9 Oct 1825. They moved from Theresa to Clinton Co, MI sometime between 1850 & 1852. Their children were Lafayette W. 1844 NY, James B. 1846 NY, John M. 1848 NY, Alvah Pricilla 1850 NY, Delia 1852 MI, Adah 1854 MI, Melvin 1858 MI, Benjamin 1860 MI, and Ida Rosina 1860 MI. Benjamin served in the Civil war as a Private-unassigned enlisted on 8 Sept 1864 and discharged 26 Oct 1864 in the 23 Regiment of the Michigan Volunteers Infantry Co. A, Wilsey, Clinton Co. MI. He is listed in the "Michigan Veterans of the Civil War Burial Sites". Their daughter, Adah married Henry VanGorder, their son John married Hortense (#29982079), and their daughter Rosina married Frank Sanborn.
