US Congressman. He served during the Civil War in Company A, 35th New York Volunteer Infantry, taking part in the Battles of Second Bull Run, Chantilly, South Mountain, Antietam and Fredericksburg. He was elected to represent New York's 24th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1900 until his death in 1901. In 1899 he was elected as Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic.
