Dr. J. M. Davis
Columbia, SC -- Dr. J. McMahan Davis died Thursday morning at the Richland memorial Hospital in Columbia following a short illness.
Dr. Davis was born in North, SC, a son of the late Dr. Jerome Marquis and Celeste Salley Davis. Dr. Davis was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and the Medical College of South Carolina, Class of 1925.
He took his residency in urology at Johns Hopkins Univesity. Dr. Davis was in private practice in Columbia until 1942 when he became a flight surgeon in the Army Air Corps and served in the European Theatre. From 1946 until his retirement in 1970 he was urologist with the Veterans Administration Hospital in Columbia. From 1970 until his death, he was a urologist with the S. C. State Hospital.
Dr. Davis was a member of the Richland County and the S. C. Medical Associations, the Southeastern Section of the American Urologists Association, the Tarantella Club, the Columbia Cotillion Club, the Forest Lake Club and a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church.
He is survived by the widow, Mrs. Mary Burke Davis of Columbia; one daughter, Miss Mary Elizabeth Davis of Columbia; four sons, John G. Davis of Sydney, Australia, Jerome M. Davis, Legare McMahan Davis and Charles E. Davis, all of Columbia; and one sister, Mrs. Norma Thatcher of Charleston.
Funeral service will be at 11 am Friday from the graveside in Penn Branch Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Scott May.
Friends may call at the Culler Funeral HOme in North and at the residence, 846 Arbutus Drive, in Columbia.
Active pallbearers will be Dr. James W. Hayes, Dr. H. L. Burnette, Jack Holt Black, Emert Rice, Robert S. Corbett, Dr. Racine Brown, M. E. Livingston and H. Edward Brown.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the staff of the Burns Clinic and members of the Columbia Medical Society and also Dr. William Weston Jr, Dr. Thomas A. Pitts, Dr. Walter Roberts, Dr. Roland Pike and Dr. Ben N. Miller.
