W. Wallace Alexander, son of Mr and Mrs. William W. Alexander, and Margaret Mae Colligan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Colligan, were married at St. Joseph's Catholic Church on August 26, 1948. Wally was farming in partnership with his family west of Lyons. Margaret had been employed at Blair Hospital as a registered nurse. They lived in Lyons area all their married life.
They had eight children: Bill, Trish, Jean, Peggy, Cathi, Mary Lou, Camilla, and John.
Margaret has participated in West Side Aid and Altar Society. Both Margaret and Wally are members of Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. Wallace served in World War II in France and Germany. He was a prisoner of war from July 23, 1944 to January 21, 1945.
Wally and his brothers raised registered purebred cattle. Everybody shared daily chores of milking cows, feeding livestock, and field work. They kept busy in the summer -- painting buildings, walking beans, and working on 4-H projects. The kids were all members of the Neary-Paine 4-H club.
All eight children were fortunte to attend Neary School (District 63), a one-room country school three miles west of Lyons, All children, as well as their mother, are graduates of Lyons High School. They each went on to receive a college degree.

Prisoners of War

Sergeant Wallace Alexander, a farmer now west of Lyons, was in on the invasion of France with the 90th Infantry Division and taken prisoner July 3, 1944. He was held in various prisoner of war camps until Kristin, Germany. He ws liberated by the Russians in January 1945, in their drive on Berlin.
