Rear Admiral Stephen Everington Jones was born Jan 14, 1906 in Duluth, Minnesota, the son of Stephen Henry Jones (1868 - 1948) and Minerva Vial Jones (1878 - 19__).

Adm. Jones received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Michigan in 1928, and his bachelor of laws in 1930. He played on the University of Michigan hockey team from 1927 to 1930, serving as captain of the team. He was admitted to the Minnesota bar in 1930, and the Pennsylvania bar in 1934.

Adm. Jones served several tours of active duty with the Navy between 1936 and 1956. He graduated from the FBI Military Officers Training course in 1941. He saw service in the South Pacific as an intelligence and security officer for Assault Drone Squadron SATFOR. He served on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations as Assistant Director of Naval Intelligence from 1953 to 1956.

After his release from active duty in 1956, Adm. Jones returned to his civilian law practice, Jones, Benson & Dwyer. He continued his military career by serving as a reservist in the Navy Reserve Intelligence program. He was selected for rear admiral in 1962 and retired in 1966.

Adm. Jones married Florence Koehler King Jones (1909 - 1998). Mrs. Jones was a granddaughter of Erie brewery founder, Jackson Koehler (1850 - 1903). Adm. and Mrs. Jones lived a block west of the old Koehler brewery in Erie on State Street.

Adm. Jones had a brother, CAPT Robert F. Jones, USN (1908 - 1998), who also served in the Navy. The admiral and his brother coauthored the book, National Security Disasters Their Cause and Prevention: On America's Continuing Military Strengths Rests the Peace and Security of the World.

Adm. Jones died Apr 24, 1997. He was survived by his wife, two daughters, a brother, seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. His obituary was published Apr 25, 1997 in the Erie Daily Times, page 3E.

Adm. Jones was one of five natives of Erie, Pennsylvania in the twentieth century to attain flag rank in the U.S. Navy. Others included John R. Johannesen (1901 - 1995), Denys W. Knoll (1907 - 1989) and Charles Curtze (1911 - 2007). The fifth admiral is still living.
