MSGT. ALVIN STERLING POLLARD U.S. Air Force, Retired 75, of Las Vegas, passed away Oct. 3, 2011. He was born Jan. 4, 1936, to Marlfrey and Clifton Pollard (both deceased), in Washington, D.C., and was a 37-year resident of Nevada.

Alvin was raised in Arlington, Va. by his grandparents, Ardeemer and Sterling Harris (both deceased). He has one brother, Leon Pollard of Bowie, Md. Alvin was preceded in death by his sister, Joyce Hueston.

Alvin was educated in the schools of Arlington and A & T college in Greensboro, N.C. He entered the U.S. Air Force in 1954. After various duties, he became a construction engineer with the Air Force Combat Construction Squadron. Alvin was a veteran of the Vietnam War, 1967-1968.

While in the Air Force, he met and married Jennie Winston of Durham, N.C. To this union were born three children, Regina Delores Pollard of Phoenix, Jenal A. Pollard of northern Virginia, and Kevin Winston Pollard, currently stationed in Anchorage, Alaska with the Air National Guard. Kevin has two children, Gregory and Tiffani Pollard.

Upon his retirement from the Air Force, Alvin worked for the Las Vegas Valley Water District as an inspector supervisor. He retired from there in 2000. In 1981 Alvin, his wife Jennie along with Reverend Fletcher Harris and his wife Edna Harris and 9 others met and organized Unity Baptist Church. In 1996 he became a member of the Victory Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as an associate minister.

Visitation will be 9-11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, with services following, both at Victory Missionary Baptist Church, 500 W. Monroe Ave. Graveside services following at Palm Valley View Memorial Park, 7600 S. Eastern Ave.

Donations can be made to the Las Vegas Rescue Mission.
