During World War I, Ashcraft served in Bakery Company Number 9 of the Rainbow Division, American Expeditionary Forces. He died in a base hospital in France on December 17, 1917.

Anselm, like his father, was named for his great-uncle, Anselm M. Ashcraft. The first son of his parents, he was a favorite of all, including my mother, Mary Darthula.
