14 June 1909.
"KILLED BY STREETCAR WALTER AYER, BOTH LEGS SEVERED, HURRIED TO HOSPITAL IN VAIN
Walter L. Ayer, 21 years old, and employee of the Great Western railroad, St. Paul [MN], died today at St. Barnabas hospital from injuries received when he was run over by a Plymouth and Bloomington streetcar on Plymouth Avenue between Olive and Penn Avenue N.
Witnesses say Ayer was running for a car after leaving the home of friends in the vicinity of the accident. He ran in front of one car, and failing to see another approaching was knocked down. Both legs were severed at the knee.
The man was taken to Hennepin and Washington avenue on the car and later removed to the hospital in the police ambulance."

"HIS LIFE CRUSHED OUT
Fatal Accident to Former Knoxville Boy
Walter Ayres Succumbs to His Injuries
After Eleven Hours in Semi-Conscious condition.
Walter L. Ayres, of whose death we made a brief mention last week, was run over and terribly mangled by a street car in Minneapolis Sunday evening, June 13. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. S. P. Ayres, and was born and raised in Knoxville. For the past two years he had been employed in the railroad offices of the Great Western at St. Paul, and on the night of the accident had been to call on a lady friend at Minneapolis. The following dispatch to the Marshalltown Times-Republican gives the details of the accident:
'Minneapolis, June 14,--Just after bidding his sweetheart good-bye and while crossing the street to catch the car for home, Walter L, Ayres, 22 years old, son of Mrs. Mary E. Ayres, 209 North Fourth street, Marshalltown, Iowa, was run down by a south-bound Plymouth and Bloomington car, at the corner of Morgan and Plymouth avenues, North Minneapolis, at 1 o'clock this morning, and received injuries from which he died at noon today at St. Barnabas hospital.
Mr. Ayres was visiting a young lady friend, Miss Blanche Barnett, who lives at the home of her sister, Mrs. R. W. Johnson, 2100 Plymouth Avenue north. He left the house just in time to catch a 1 o'clock car for town, Miss Barnett accompanied him to the street. She was the only witness to the accident. It is thought that the young man misjudged the distance of the car, and thought that he could get across before it got to him.'
The remains were taken to the home of his mother at Marshalltown where funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon. The body was brought to Knoxville on Thursday morning and taken immediately to Graceland, where after short services it was laid to rest in the family lot beside the bodies of his father and elder brother.
Deceased leaves a mother, three sisters and two brothers-Mrs. S. P. Ayres and Miss Edith Ayres, of Marshalltown, Mrs. W. L. Witter, of Valley City, North Dakota, Mrs. B. E. Langworthy, of Burke, South Dakota, Charles of Edgar, Nebraska, and Herbert, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, all of whom were present at the interment here except Herbert. Other relatives and friends present from out of town were: Mrs. O. B. Ayres, Miss Florence Ayres and J. J. Fellingham, of Des Moines; Mrs. H. F. Shearer, of Omaha; R. W. Ayres, of Allerton; Royce Ayres, of Bussey."
