Dale Sherwin Bingham, 87, died Monday, October 3, 2011 at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) following an extended illness.

The family will greet friends at Lensing's Oak Hill in Coralville. Memorial Services will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Society, Iowa City, with Rev. Steven Protzman officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Wilcox Cemetery near Viola, Iowa. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Unitarian Universalist Society or the University of Iowa Foundation for Pulmonary Rehab at UIHC.

Dale was born in Manning, Iowa, the son of Jay L. and Claribel (Griffith) Bingham. He graduated from Manning High School in 1941, and served in the US Navy during World War II. Dale received a Bachelor's degree and Master's degree in speech pathology from the University of Iowa. He was a speech and language consultant with the University of Iowa for 23 years, retiring in 1987. On August 22, 1952 Dale married Celia Collins of Viola, Iowa.

His memberships include the Unitarian Universalist Society, Coralville American Legion, and Cedar Rapids Power Squadron. Dale enjoyed teaching line dancing at the Iowa City Senior Center. He was instrumental in the development of North Liberty Telecommunications and Public Access TV. Dale and his wife were contributors to the construction of North Liberty Community Center and library. They also established the Bingham Innovation Award to assist in funding innovative ideas in speech and hearing in Iowa.

Dale is survived by his wife of 59 years, Celia; their daughter, Stephanie (Paul) Bernhagen and Las Cruces, NM and their son, Dirk L. Bingham (Carole Brown) of Riverside; two grandchildren, Melissa and Kyle Bingham; his sister, Joyce Hudgens of Urbandale and many nephews and nieces.
