MURDER ENDS NEW STUDENT'S DREAM
Julia Allison Wise moved to Iowa City last week with plans to attend the University of Iowa and dreams of working abroad. But, those plans ended when Wise, 20, of Hilltop Mobile Home Park, was murdered this week. Her body was found Thursday by a Hilltop employee.
Iowa City Police said Friday that Wise died of an apparent stab wound, but they – and state Division of Criminal Investigation agents and Dr. Victor Edwards, Johnson County Medical Examiner – have refused to release any other information. Authorities also have refused to speculate on a motive or suspects.
Friends and relatives say Wise moved to Iowa City from Springfield, MO., last Friday to enroll in the UI. She had been admitted to the university and was working at Baker's Shoe Store in Westdale Mall in Cedar Rapids.
"She was very reliable," said Robert Rolfes, and assistant manager at Baker's. "Anything you would tell her to do she would do it." Rolfes said Wise began working as a part-time salesperson a week ago today. He last saw her Monday night when she left work about an hour early. She was scheduled to work again Thursday afternoon but never showed.
Dave Iwasko, assistant manager of a Springfield shoe store where Wise worked until leaving town, said she was excited about attending the UI. "She wanted to go up there and get a degree and work outside the U.S.," Iwasko said. He said Wise hoped to work for the United Nations or as a private interpreter. "She was very high-spirited and nice to everybody," he said. "I can't imagine anybody who would want to hurt her."
Wise who was born in Milwaukee, WI, had lived in Springfield since 1979. She was active in French club, marching band, flag corps, and the swimming team in high school. After graduating from high school in 1983, she attended Southwest Missouri State University for one year, and then worked for one year before moving to Iowa City. Wise's survivors include her parents, Ferd O. Jr. and Martha A., two brothers, and a grandparent.
