A good looking, hard working, quiet man, known among his brothers and sisters as "very precise". He served in the Army as a Private from January 20, 1921 to January 19, 1922. He met and married Susie Evans and they lived in Hopewell, Virginia, where they had three daughters (one set of twins) and a son.

They moved to Phoebus, VA in the 1930s where he began a long career working for the National Soldiers Home in Hampton. He was strong, kind and caring, loved to fish in the Chesapeake Bay, loved his liquor and his family. He died too young of a heart attack in his sleep.
