NEW ORLEANS -- The Rev. Lloyd Anthony Barry, S.J., a priest who formerly served at Spring Hill College, died Easter morning at the Jesuit Ignatius Residence in New Orleans. He was 88. Barry, a native of Alexandria, La., graduated from Louisiana State University with a mechanical engineering degree in 1941 and entered the Jesuit order on Christmas Day of that year. He spent his early years as a priest in extended assignments at Spring Hill College and at St. Charles College in Grand Coteau, La. In the 1960s, he supervised the Brothers' Maintenance Corps of the Southern Province of Jesuits. The corps traveled in the summer, renovating Jesuit residences. Barry also served as a missionary in Brazil in the early 1970s. After his return in 1973, he ministered at Jesuit College Prep in Dallas for 15 years. Later, he moved to Heart Parish in El Paso, Texas, aiding indigent Mexican-Americans. He moved to Ignatius Residence in 1995. Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Hoyt Strain of Baton Rouge, La., and Mrs. J.M. Brown of Zachary, La.; and his brother, Donald Barry of Perryville, Mo. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday at the Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church on St. Charles Avenue in New Orleans, with a funeral Mass to follow. Burial will be in the Jesuit Cemetery of St. Charles College. Arrangements are by Jacob Schoen and Son Funeral Home of New Orleans. Memorials may be made to the Jesuit Retirement Fund, 500 S. Jefferson Davis Parkway, New Orleans, LA 70119.
