She was the oldest child of Perley and Mary. They lived at 708 South Grand Ave. in Bozeman in 1910. Perley was born in Vermont, his father in New York, and his mother in Vermont. Mary was born in Missouri, her father in Michigan, and her mother in Pennsylvania.

Perley was a real estate agent. Also in the family in 1910 were Helen's sister, Flora, age 6, and brother Gardiner, age 2. In 1920 they lived at 901 South Central (now Willson) Ave. in Bozeman, and Perley had his own real estate office. Perley's aunt, Helen K Hodgman, age 71, was also living with them. She was born in Vermont, her mother in Massachusetts, and her father in New Hampshire.

In 1930 they all still lived at 901 South Willson Ave. Their house was valued at $8000. Perley was a salesman of land and insurance, and Helen was a Home Economics teacher at the College.

In 1940 Helen lived at 21 Davenport in Iowa City, Iowa. She was a lodger in the household of Laura McAdams, age 39, from Kansas. Helen was a professor at the university, and in 36 weeks of work in 1939 earned $2100. Her landlady was a high school teacher who worked 52 weeks in 1939 and made $2200. The other lodger was Edna Hill, age 41, from New Hampshire, who was also a university professor. She had worked 36 weeks in 1939 and made $2600.
