US Congressman. He was elected as an Anti-Jacksonian to represent Virginia's 17th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1833 to 1835. In 1861 he was a delegate to the Virginia Secession Convention, where as an anti-slavery opponent he vigorously advocated against secession.
