Gus grew up in Edna, Texas and received a masters degree in chemistry from Stephen F Austin University at the age of 27. He married Jacqueline Gilley, who he had met at Victoria Junior College on July 26, 1975. He worked for Dow Chemical in Freeport, Texas for a number of years. He was living in Houston, Texas on Morley St. near Hobby airport at the time of his death at the age of 37. He apparently choked to death at his home. But perhaps because of his work as a chemist, several people think that his death might not have been an accident. They said it took 20 minutes for the ambulance to arrive.
