U.S. Senator. He graduated from Mercer University, in 1900, from its law department in 1901, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Vienna, Georgia. He was solicitor general of the Cordele judicial circuit, (1907-12), judge of the superior court, (1912-17) and associate justice of the Georgia State Supreme Court, (1917-22). In 1922, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Thomas E. Watson and reelected in 1926, serving until 1957. He was then appointed President Dwight Eisenhower’s special ambassador to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, serving until his death at age 79.
