U.S. Congressman. Born in Chester Township, Pennsylvania, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1806 and commenced to practice law in Chester. He served in the US Military during the War of 1812 and was a member of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives, (1814-16). In 1819, he was elected as Federalist to the Sixteenth, Seventeenth Congresses, elected as a Jackson Federalist to the Eighteenth Congress and reelected as a Jacksonian to the Nineteenth Congress, serving until 1827. After his final term, he was the Pennsylvania inspector of customs (1838-42) and practice law until death at age 65 in Chester, Pennsylvania.
