U.S. Congressman. Born in West Chester, Pennsylvania, he graduated from West Chester Academy, taught school (1817-20), studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1821 and commenced to practice law in Chester, Pennsylvania. He was Deputy Attorney General (1824-30), when elected as an Anti-Masonic candidate to the Twenty-third through Twenty-fifth Congresses, serving (1833-39). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law, was attorney for county commissioners (1846-56) and District Attorney of Delaware County, Pennsylvania, (1851-54).
