US Congressman. Born in Salisbury, Rowan County, North Carolina, he attended the University of North Carolina, was commissioned an officer in the 4th United States Infantry Regiment, serving and then engaged in planting. During the Creek War, he commanded the Georgia Volunteers as a Major General of the 3rd Division of the Georgia State militia. He was superintendent of the Georgia State Penitentiary, secretary of State of Georgia, and the City of Newnan, was named for him in 1828. In 1831, he was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-second Congress, serving until 1833. He died at age 71 died near Rossville, Georgia.
