John Robert was born in Campbell Co.,Kentucky to Charles Timothy and Maria Louisa Hopkins Maphet. He and his father served together in the Missouri Calvary Volunteers in 1861 for the The Union in the Civil War. They went home to Kansas after the battles in 1861 and then joined the Kansas Union Calvary. John Robert joined the 9th Calvary and Charlie T. joined the 15th Calvary. John Robert mustered out in 1865. He then married Alice Munger in 1866. In 1868 there was an indian uprising and some Kansas farm families were captured and taken. Capt Ellsworth of the U.S. Forces requested that J.R. volunteer to join up with Lt Col. Geo A. Custer to go fight the indians in Indian Territory (Oklahoma). J.R., his younger brother Charles W. and a good friend he fought with Mortimer Marcy (who later married his older sister) Went to fight. They ended up in a terrible Kansas blizzard and did not make it on time to meet up with Custer. They later met up after the Battle of the Washita or (Washita Massacre) was over in Indian Territory. John Robert and his wife Alice had 9 children. John Robert worked as an Engineer for the railroads out of Kansas. He later farmed. John Robert and Alice's next to youngest son Cyrus Ernest and his wife Goldie Cecil (Maphet)Maphet are also buried in this cemetery. Goldie and Ernest were first cousins.
