Fred W. Yazell Sr., 91, of Springfield died Saturday, April 12, 2003, at Memorial Medical Center. He was born June 7, 1911, in Springfield, the son of Fred and Julia Simon Yazell. He married Mary Dorothy Blazis in 1939. Mr. Yazell was an inspector for the state of Illinois and also owned and operated Marquis Grill and the Munch-n-ette. He played professional baseball; three years with the Cincinnati Reds, two years with the St. Louis Cardinals and two years with the Boston Red Sox. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in England and France. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Springfield Sports Hall of Fame and Veterans of Foreigh Wars. Survivors: wife, Mary D.; a daughter, Sharon Smith of Springfield; a son, Fred Jr. (wife, J. Chris) Yazell of Springfield; five grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday, Staab Funeral Home, Monsignor Kenneth Steffen and Monsignor John Renken officiating. Burial: Calvary Cemetery.
