Son of Simeon D. Babcock III and Liberty Furman.

Spring Valley Sun March 29, 1923: John W. Babcock identified with Maiden Rock for many years died at Rochester, Minnesota March 18, of neuralgia of the heart.
The suddenness of Mr. Babcock's death was shock to his home community as only two weeks before he was there in apparently good health.
John Babcock was born in Pennsylvania September 17, 1851. At the age of seven years he came to De Soto, Wisconsin with his parents. His father died soon after their arrival.
June 30, 1873 he was married to Rosia Baker, who with one adopted son, Earl W. of Red Wing and a step-daughter Mrs. Oliver Tuttle, of Rochester, survives him. Their only child Harvey born November 6, 1876 died at De Sota at the age of 7 years of diphtheria.
Mr. Babcock came to Maiden Rock in 1895 and was engaged in the hotel business about 12 year. Since his retirement from the hotel he was engaged in shipping of grain. During these years he came in contact with hundreds of farmers who recognized him as a man of sterling worth and character. His genial and pleasing manner made for him a host of friends. He joined the Maiden Rock Mason lodge in 1904, having previously been a charter member of the Viroqua Lodge, and his apron has never been stained. He was a mason in the truest sense. If there was sickness or want in the community, he was the first to find it out and first to respond.
He had decided opinions on the affairs of this worked and was generous to a fault. His love and devotion to his wife was one of outstanding characteristics.
The number of those who will regret his death and speak kind words of his integrity, his generosity, and other excellent qualities is many. Measured by the rule of the Master of Mankind he was a great man.
Funeral was held from the M. E. Church at Maiden Rock Tuesday, March 20, under Masonic auspices, Rev. T.S. Kell officiating, the remains were taken to De Sota for burial.
