U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1827 and commenced the practice of law, at Woodstock, Virginia. Entering politics, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-sixth Congress, serving (1839-41). After leaving Congress, he resumed the practice of law and was a member of the Virginia State constitutional convention in 1850. In 1851, he was elected a judge of the Virginia State Circuit Court and served until his death.
