U.S. Congressman. He attended the Tappahannock and Rappahannock Academies, graduated from the law department of the University of Virginia in 1842, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Tappahannock, Virginia. He served as attorney for the Commonwealth from 1852, until he resigned to join the Confederate Army. During the Civil War, he served as an officer on the staff of General George E. Pickett. After the war, he resumed his law practice and was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-ninth Congress, serving (1885-87). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law, engaged in agricultural pursuits and was judge of Essex County, Virginia, (1892-1901).
