US Congressman and physician. Appointed by Congress as a physician and surgeon general of the Northern Department of the Continental Army in 1780, serving until the close of the Revolutionary War. Elected to represent New York's 5th District in the United States House of Representatives, serving in 1801. Also served as a Member of the New York State Assembly in 1788, Member of the New York State Senate for the Middle District from 1790 to 1799, and Secretary of the State of New York from 1801 to 1806, and 1807 to 1808.
