Hazel Hartley, 85, of Garden City, died Friday, September 28, 2001 in a Clark Care Center.

Hazel Hartley was born June 25, 1916 on the Keller farm at Eldon Township near Ellendale, ND to James and Clara (Keller) Watson. She attended country school in North Dakota.

Hazel married Ralph Hartley in Ellendale, ND on April 6, 1940. Mr & Mrs Hartley farmed near Jud for a time before moving into town where they owned a gas station and a cafe. In addition, Hazel did babysitting, housecleaning, and laundry for various individuals throughout the area. Mr & Mrs Hartley moved to Garden City, SD from Jud, ND in 1963. At that time, Hazel worked on the potato crews for Anderson's and Foster's. She also worked for Fairfield and Chef Reddy Foods in Clark until she was 75. Hazel was a distributor for Stanley products for many years.

Hazel enjoyed many hobbies, some of which included; playing bingo, collecting 1375 different sets of salt and pepper shakers, crossword puzzles, working on family history, and doing intricate beadwork that she took to sell at area craft shows. Hazel raised 200-300 chickens every year that she butchered, dressed and sold.

Mrs Hartley was a member of the United Methodist Church in Garden City, the PTA, 4-H, Band Mothers, and the Legion Auxiliary. She was also active in the community choir, community plays, and the church choir.

Hazel is survived by her husband-Ralph of Garden City; 3 daughters and their husbands-Gloria and Richard Rowe; Blanch and Vincent Flanigan; Bonny and Gordon Bruns; 1 son-Raymond and Charlene Hartley; 9 grandchildren-Frank, Bob Rowe, Butch Flanigan, Mark Hartley, Conda Luedtke, Charlotte Lenhard, Roy, Ray, and Richard Palmer; 7 great grandchildren; 1 sister-Laura Hay of Oakes, ND

She was preceded in death by her parents, 5 brothers-Robert, Walter, Byron, Edwin, Edward; 2 sisters-Ethel, Dorothy; 2 grandchildren-Ricky Rowe, Carmela Toth; 1 great granddaughter-Elizabeth Palmer.
