Dr. Jim Bates was born on Sunday, August 12, 1906, in Melrose, IA, the son of Joe and Maggie (Morrison) Bates.

On Wednesday, October 16, 1935, Jim married Cleo Schleier in Albia, IA.

Jim grew up in Melrose and graduated from MHS in 1922. He earned a DDS degree from Creighton University in 1930. Jim's son Jim and his grandson Joe later also earned their dental degrees from Creighton.

Jim entered the US Army in 1943 and was a major in the Pacific campaign in WWII, serving in the Philippines campaign. He was a division dental surgeon, with 11 dental officers under his supervision.

Jim was a dentist in Albia before and after his military service, a total of 45 years of dentistry. His son Jim, Jr., was associated in practice with him in the latter years.

Jim was a lifelong Catholic and a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a life member of the Iowa and American Dental Associations.

Jim was a dedicated golfer.

Jim and Cleo had 1 son: Jim.

Jim, 68 years old, died at 2:40 a.m. Friday, May 16, 1975, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Ottumwa, IA. The cause of his death was cancer, with which he had been ill for years. The Humeston Funeral Home of Albia was in charge of the arrangements; a rosary was recited there on Sunday evening, May 18. Father R. F. Schwank said the funeral Mass on Monday, May 19, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Albia. Jim was buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Albia.
