U.S. Congressman. Moving to New York, in 1808, he served in the U.S. Military Service during the War of 1812. After the war, he was editor of the Madison City Observer, a member of the New York State Senate, (1814-18) and clerk of Madison County, (1821-25). In 1837, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-fifth Congress, serving until 1839. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he returned to his newspaper interests until his death at age 59.
