William Roy Ellis always went by his middle name - Roy.
In 1909 Roy Ellis was attending the Peninsula-Lamine School, located three miles north of Clifton City, Missouri. The school was established in the 1840's and served both Cooper and Pettis counties. The original school was name Culp School. In 1909 the teacher was Miss Delphia Richards who later married Henry Palmer. Students in 1909 were: Lowell Ellis, Ora Ellis, Ray (Roy?) Ellis, Van Ellis, John Ellis, Helen Ellis, George Ellis, Hazel Ellis and others.

Roy Ellis married three times. He first married Lucille Effie Greer Dec. 23, 1911 at Dresden, Pettis county, Missouri and in 1920 she died of pneumonia. They had one daughter, Lillian Lucille Ellis, before her death.

When daughter Lucille Ellis was born on 25 Nov 1913, W. R. Ellis was age 20, living at Sedalia, MO, working as a coal hauler, and he was born at Clifton City, MO. [SOURCE: Lucille Ellis' birth record]

At the time of his World War I Draft Registration he was age 23 and married with one child in 1918. He registered for the draft in Sedalia, Pettis, Missouri and gave his address as 1007 S. Moss, Sedalia. He said he was a warehouse laborer for a grocer in Sedalia.

Roy married second to Alma Cordia Israel about 1920 and she also died after a short time of aplastic anemia. They had one daughter June Evelyn Ellis in 1921 before her death in 1927.

Roy Ellis married third on July 12, 1944 at Belton, Cass county, Missouri to Vennie C. Fiser Truelove Tittle.

Obituary from the Kansas City Star newspaper:

"Ellis - Roy William Ellis, 58 years old, 1115 Troost Ave. died today at a nursing home at 3217 Cleveland Ave., after an illness of fourteen months. He was an awning installer. He was born at Sedalia, Mo. and lived here thirty years. Mr. Ellis was a member of the Baptist church. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Vennie Ellis of the home; two daughters, Mrs. June Landrith, 3329 Mersington Ave. and Mrs. Lucille Mahalovich, Sedalia; a sister, Mrs. Ora Potter, Sedalia; four brothers, Monroe Ellis, 4000 Bales Ave.; George Ellis, Sedalia; Clyde Ellis, McClelland, Ia.; and Frank Ellis, Denver; two step-daughters, Mrs. Travis Arnold and Mrs. Geneva Truelove, both of the home and a stepson, James W. Truelove, Grandview. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Thursday at the Newcomer Chapel."

Roy Ellis died at 5:15 A.M. at the age of 58 at the Malott Nursing Home, 3217 Cleveland Ave., Kansas City, Missouri. The informant was his wife, Mrs. Vennie Ellis, living at 1115 Troost Avenue, Kansas City, Missouri.

On 6 Jun 1996, with the help of the Park Lawn Funeral Home records, Donald D. Nutt and Roy Ellis' Granddaughter Peggy A.(Landrith) Nutt (44 years after his death) located the unmarked grave of Wm. Roy Ellis at the Green Lawn Cemetery, near the Park Lawn Funeral Home on Hillcrest Road, just north of 83rd Street, Kansas City, MO. Entering in at gate 2, the grave is in section 7. A flat marker was put in place on 12 July 1996.
