Son of William and Hannah (Harriman) Mayhew, married Clarissa Richmond (her second husband, formerly married to Mr. McFarland), 1840.
-----------------
Franklin was apprenticed to a tanner, then to a blacksmith. He was also a proficient drummer; he was drummer boy in the local Militia Assembly in the NY State Militia. For a while Franklin plied a "Packet" between Sandusky, Ohio and Buffalo, New York and Erie. He carried both freight and passengers. This man spoke fluent French. He gave each daughter 50 acres of land when she married.
-----------------
Daughter Teressa was about three years old when the Mayhews came to Indiana. They went first to Illinois, then came back to Indiana and bought their farm of about 200 acres, which at that time was mostly heavily wooded. Rhoda, Teressa's sister, told of hearing a panther scream one night when she was a child. They were sitting by their big old fireplace. Shortly after, their hired man came stumbling in against the door. The panther had followed him to the clearing and seeing the light from the house, gave up the chase. This farm was known for many years as the Franklin Mayhew farm. Franklin was buried in the Bethesda Cemetery near this farm.
