John William (Bill) Gardner, age 85, of Joplin, MO., died at 3:45 A.M. Saturday, September 16, 2000, at Spring River Christian Village after a long illness.
Born September 23, 1914, in Joplin, he was the son of Fredrick Charles Gardner and Eva Dawson Gardner and lived in Joplin his entire lifetime. A 1932 graduate of Joplin High School, he attended college at Iowa State University at Ames, Iowa. He worked for General Electric Co. in Schenectady, N.Y., he was president and general manager of Ozark Engineering Co. in Joplin until retiring in 1983 from the company which his father founded in the early 1900's. He served 12 years as a Joplin City Councilman. He was past president of Joplin Chamber of Commerce, receiving its Churchman of the Year award. He served nine years and was past president of the Board of Directors of St. John's Regional Medical Center, volunteeering with the auxiliary for several years. He was head coach for the Sunny Jim's Pee Wee Baseball School for many years, and served on the Joplin YMCA board. He was an elder and deacon at First Presbyterian Church.
On February 25, 1940, he married Billie Irene Sweeten/Watkins at First Presbyterian Church in Joplin. She survives.
Additional survivors include three sons, Gary Gardner and John Gardner, both of Joplin, Phil Gardner of Kansas City, MO, a daughter, Joyce Elder of Salem, OR, three brothers, Robert Gardner of Houston, TX, James Gardner of Austin, TX, Paul Richard Gardner of Encino, CA, a sister, Mary Ann Stansberry of Joplin; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
The body will be cremated. Memorial funeral services will be at 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, September 19, 2000, at First Presbyterian Church with the Reverend William Christman officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
