Cook was an auctioneer by trade. He served as major of the 2nd Infantry Battalion, Virginia Reserves, from July 1864 to April 1865, when the unit was surrendered at Appomattox Court House.

After the death of his first wife, he married Mary Margaret McDougal in Richmond on 23 April 1866. He died age 74, per Cemetery records, and is buried near Margaret and all his children in the plot he owned.
