Chief Justice, Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. He was the grandson of a man who was born into slavery but managed to become a minister and dean of South Carolina State College. In 1971, Mr. Nix, became the first and only African-American to be elected to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. He was the only African-American ever to win a statewide election in Pennsylvania. He attended Villanova University and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1953. Justice Nix gained prominence as a criminal lawyer in the 1960's and was elected common pleas judge in 1968. In 1984 he became Chief Justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, a position he held until his retirement in 1996. Throughout his career he was dedicated to the preservation and protection of individual rights. Mr. Justice Nix in later life suffered from Alzheimer's disease. He was buried from Saint Madeleine Sophie Roman Catholic Church in Germantown, Philadelphia.
