Elijah married Sarah Ellen Stark in Vigo Co, IN on March 21, 1861. Their children were Ora, Mary Elizabeth, Benjamin F., William Webster, John Ward, Wade Hampton, Charles, & Harry Herman.

Elijah served on the side of the Union during the Civil War as a Private in 13th Regiment Indiana Infantry Co. G. He enlisted on Dec. 13, 1864 & served until Sept. 5, 1865, when he was discharged in Goldsboro, NC.
