STONEVILLE — Curtis Jones Bennett, Sr., 81, of 103 Brown Street, died Monday, October 10, 2011, at Moses Cone Hospital.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, October 13, 2011, at First Baptist Church of Stoneville. Interment will follow in Stoneville Municipal Cemetery.

Mr. Bennett was born August 8, 1930, in Stokes County, to the late Roger Alton and Hallie Mae Shelton Bennett. He was a retired contractor, builder and brick mason, a retired teacher and golf coach of Western Rockingham City School System and a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Stoneville where he served as a trustee, choir member and was Deacon Emeritus. Curtis was also a member of Deep Springs Country Club, Stoneville Jaycees, Stoneville Volunteer Fire Department, the Board of Directors of Hospice of Rockingham County and various other volunteer groups and organizations. Mr. Bennett was a former Stoneville town councilman and mayor pro-tem and secretary of Woodmen of the World.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by daughter-in-law, Sue Bollinger Bennett and grandsons, Philip Bollinger Bennett and Hogan Allen Bailey.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Joan Frye Bennett; son, Curtis Jones Bennett, Jr., of Stoneville; daughters, Cathy B. Hayes and husband, Danny, of Winston-Salem and Sharon B. Bailey and husband, Bob, of Stoneville; grandchildren, Curtis Jones Bennett, III, and wife, Katherine, Ivey Bennett Gunn and husband, Craig, Allee Jo Bennett, Shannon Hayes Callahan and husband, Austin, Jennifer Elizabeth Bailey and Hannah Catherine Bailey and great-grandchildren, William Riley Gunn, Sadie Caroline Gunn, Connor Scott Callahan and Ethan Neil Callahan.

The family will receive friends from 4 until 7 p.m., Wednesday, October 12, 2011, at First Baptist Church of Stoneville, 300 East Main Street, Stoneville, NC and all other times at the home.

Those wishing to may make memorials to First Baptist Church of Stoneville, Building Fund, PO Box 274, Stoneville, NC 27048.

The family wishes to thank all the caregivers of Western Rockingham Family Medicine and the Moses Cone Hospital ICU/Critical Care Unit.
