John E. Opper, 95, of 160 E. Walnut St., Canton, Ill., passed away at 7:25 a.m. Monday, Oct. 10, 2011, at Graham Hospital Extended Care in Canton.

He was born Oct. 7, 1916, in rural Farmington, the son of John W. and Edna (Dunning) Opper. He married Dorothy Suydam in 1939 in Fort Madison, Iowa. She died Aug. 9, 2011.

Surviving are one sister, Betty (Opper) Vaughn of Astoria; two sons, William (Shirley) Opper of Lincoln and Terry (Sheila) Opper of Morton; eight grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Also preceding him in death were his parents.

John worked for 39 1/2 years as an assembler at International Harvester, retiring in 1975.

A World War II Army Air Forces veteran, he was a member of the American Legion Post 16. He was also a member of the AARP and Royal Neighbors.

An avid bowler, he was a member of the United States Bowling Congress and the Canton Bowling Association Hall of Fame.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at Murphy-Sedgwick Memorial Home in Canton, with visitation one hour prior. Brian and Vince Opper will officiate. Burial will follow in White Chapel Memory Gardens in Canton.
