Maggie (Morrison) Bates was born on Tuesday, April 27, 1880, in Melrose, Monroe County, IA, the daughter of James and Maggie (Murphy) Morrison. She was baptized at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Melrose.

On Tuesday, November 11, 1902, Maggie married Joe Bates at St. Patrick's Church in Melrose. Witnesses were P. J. Morrison and Annie Grogan.

Maggie lived her entire life in Melrose. She operated the Bates Café there, where many of the townspeople met each day to exchange updates on families.

Maggie and Joe had 3 sons and 1 daughter: Maurice, Jim, Mary, and Bill.

Maggie, 47 years old, died at 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 23, 1927, at her home in Jackson Township, Melrose, following an extended illness. The cause of her death was pernicious vomiting. Maggie had been in poor health for 4-5 years before her death, suffering from Bright's disease (interstitial nephritis, a kidney disease) and secondary anemia, but her condition was critical for only the last 2 weeks. Father W. J. McCormick said the funeral Mass on Wednesday, October 26, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church in Melrose. Maggie was buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Melrose.
