NORFOLK - John J. Pickett, 80, of the 7800 block of Michael Drive, passed away Sept. 12, 2011 in his home, surrounded by his family. Born and raised in Rutland, Vt., the son of Albert and Abbie Pickett, he was known as a man who could do anything in the world. From dairy farming to harvesting maple syrup and leading a long and distinguished career in the U.S. Navy, John was ready to meet any challenge. During his 20 years in the Navy, he proudly served his country at sea during the Korean War, the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Vietnam War. Following his naval career, he served for 20 years at the Hampton Roads Sanitation District in Norfolk. He is survived by his wife Dorothy; his sister Peggy; his children Wayne, Deborah and Patricia; his grandchildren Jennifer, Christina, Catherine and Stephanie; four great-grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews throughout the country. Visitation will be held Thursday, Sept. 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, 1501 Colonial Ave, Norfolk. Father Joseph Metzger III will officiate the funeral Mass on Friday, Sept. 16, at 9:30 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 6400 Newport Ave., Norfolk. Interment will take place after the service at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, followed by a reception at Blessed Sacrament Church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association at www.alz.org.
