Immigrated to St Louis 1850 from Germany. He worked as a wagon maker and a blacksmith in Bellefountaine (Hilltown). He was the first Burkhardt to move into the Chesterfield area. Farmed 61 acres of wheat, corn, and potatoes.

Christian purchased 21 acres where Olive Street Road crossed the railroad (north side of Olive) from August and Lizzie Sommers on 12 Oct 1887 (or 77) for $1290. There he laid out Burkhardt's Subdivision.

Also served as postmaster in 1879 of Bellemonte/Bellefontaine (land around Chesterfield MO).

Christian also built and ran the General Store in Chesterfield which was later ran by his sons, Ed and Chris. Ed then sold the store to Andy Kroeger in the early 1920s.

ST LOUIS COUNTY WATCHMAN

Last week the announcement was made in Clayton that Mr Christian Burkhardt an old and wealthy resident of Chesterfield, this county, was seriously ill with pneumonia and on Monday the sad intelligence was brought to he relatives and friends there that he had breathed his last at 9 o'clock that morning. Mr Burkhardt was a native of Germany and would had been 58 years in September.

He came to this country as a child and grew up to be an honored and respected citizen of the county and State of his adoption. After services by Rev Theo Uhdau at 11am Wednesday, the remains were taken to Boxly Cemetery, Gumbo and interred. The funeral was largely attended, the procession at least two miles in length. the pallbearers, all old friends, where Messrs: Ernst Bayer, Ernst Eberwein, Daniel Bauer, Robert Coulter, H. M. Koch and Jacob Strudt, Sr, all members of the Old Settlers' Association to which the deceased belonged. Mr Burkhardt leaves a widow and seven children, four sons and three daughters, one of whom is the wire of Deputy Recorder Peter Wetzel of Clayton. There are also five grandchildren. The Watchman extends its sincere sympathies to the bereaved family.
